Each law enforcement agency has its own process for requesting and obtaining copies of traffic accident reports. Most offer in-person pickup, and many also provide copies of reports online.
You will need to know the law enforcement agency that responded to your crash in order to request a copy of your report. Alternatively, your personal injury attorney – if you choose to work with one – can handle this process for you.
How Can I Get My Records from the Huntsville Police Department (HPD)?
The Huntsville Police Department offers you two ways to get a copy of your police report after a traffic accident. This includes:
Requesting Your Report in Person
The Records Division of the Huntsville Police Department handles requests for police reports. You can access this division between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is located at:
815 Wheeler Avenue
Huntsville, AL 35801
The division requires you to provide the accident number, date of the crash, and location as a part of your request. It will also want to see a valid photo ID to ensure you were involved in the collision.
This process takes about 72 hours before you can pick up the report. The cost is $10, and the division accepts checks and cash. Call (256) 427-7020 with questions.
Filing a Request Online
The Huntsville Police Department allows accident victims to request a copy of their report online from a third party. You can complete the online form and pay the fee with a credit or debit card. You may be able to download your report from home.

Getting a Report Filed By Alabama Highway Patrol Troopers
If Alabama Highway Patrol troopers responded to your collision, you can use the web portal from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency to request a downloadable file of your accident report. These should be available within 10 business days of the accident.
You will need your name, the report number, or your driver’s license number to request your report. Once you locate your document and pay, you will receive an email containing the report, which you will have access to for seven days.
There is a $17 fee for these reports, including $15 mandated by state law and a processing fee. You can pay with your credit or debit card.
Will an Attorney Help Me Get My Police Report After a Huntsville Car Accident?
Your attorney will have a member of their team retrieve your crash report as a part of the investigation into your accident case. You should not have to worry about this while healing from your injuries and trying to get back to work and other everyday activities.
The Morris Bart law firm will manage all aspects of developing strong support for your insurance claim and gathering evidence they can use during the claims process or at trial if a lawsuit becomes necessary.
Why Is the Crash Report Important to My Case?
Accident reports contain details that may be vital to filing your claim and recovering compensation. Without the police report, you may not even know the name of the driver who hit you or their insurer.
The police report also offers the officer’s trained and experienced opinion about what occurred and who caused it. If the at-fault driver received a traffic ticket due to their actions that led to the crash, this will also be in the report.
What Other Evidence Can My Attorney Collect?
Your lawyer will obtain your crash report as a part of a much broader investigation. This could include gathering and analyzing evidence such as:
- Witness statements
- Video surveillance of the crash
- Photos of the accident scene
- Photos of your injuries
- Accident reconstruction data
- Medical records
- Expert testimony
- Bills, receipts, estimates, and other documentation of losses
