Today, October 7, 2022, marks the grand opening celebration of the new Gayle and Tom Benson Food and Nutrition Center at Second Harvest Food Bank. With this event, Morris Bart, along with his wife, Cathy, were pleased to announce the opening of the Cathy and Morris Bart Volunteer Center which will be a permanent feature within the complex. The Volunteer Center is dedicated to the Barts after their one-million-dollar donation to the project.
The Gayle and Tom Benson Food and Nutrition Center will be pivotal in allowing the Second Harvest Food Bank to provide food and support to 700+ community partners and programs across the 23 parishes they are able to operate in. Currently, Second Harvest staff and volunteers distribute the equivalent of more than 32 million meals to 210,000+ people a year.
Hunger at home in our communities remains one of Mr. Bart’s most primary focuses with his philanthropic work. “One in five households in Louisiana is at risk of hunger.” Said Mr. Bart. “It’s vital that we make sure we have the resources and processes in place to help our neighbors.”
