Car wrecks, unfortunately, are not uncommon. Yet we still always think that it won’t happen to us. No matter how safe a driver you are, it only takes one reckless driver to cause you and your family harm. Many people find themselves mentally shaken after a wreck. It’s important to know what to do in the event you are in a car wreck.
The most important thing is to stay calm. Take a moment to gather yourself and take a deep breath. Check for injuries to yourself as well as to anyone else in the vehicle. Damage to your car can wait. If someone is hurt, it’s essential that you get him or her treatment immediately. Call an ambulance if you need to.

Once you have answered the injury question, make sure your vehicle is visible to any other drivers on the road. Turn on your hazard lights, and if you have them, set up cones. Always call the police. While you’re waiting on the police, make notes of what happened in the accident, and note any damage to each vehicle involved in the wreck. If you have a camera, take photos.
When the police arrive, be polite and stick to the facts. Give your side of the story, and try not to let emotion get the best of you. Telling the police that the other driver was at fault won’t help. The police officer will gather all the information available and come to a conclusion. You or the other driver may or may not be issued a ticket; if no one gets a ticket, that doesn’t mean that no one is at fault.
Once the police leave, call your insurance agent to tell her about the wreck. It often takes a couple weeks before your car is repaired. Try to stay patient. And most of all, stay safe on the roads!
