“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Drum Major Instinct
As we honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and celebrate Black History Month, this quote by Dr. King seems more relevant now than when he first spoke these words in 1968. Today we live in a fast pace world full of Google searches and iPhone apps. It is easy to feel disconnected from the world.

Giving Back to the Community
One of the most satisfying ways a person can give back to their community is by volunteering. A few years ago when I was just starting out in the legal profession I signed up for the Louisiana Bar Association’s Barrister for Boards program. The program places young lawyers on nonprofit boards or committees throughout the state. I was placed on the board of the ACLU of Louisiana.
My time on the board has been a rewarding experience. Whether I’m attending a Banned Books event at the House of Blues or helping to organize the annual Ben Smith Civil Liberties Award Gala, my time is always well spent. The Ben Smith award has been presented each spring since 1976. The award is named after civil rights attorney Ben Smith. The Ben Smith Award honors an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of civil liberties in Louisiana.
I encourage everyone whether you’re an attorney, student or a retiree to get involved in your community by volunteering or by helping in any way you can. America has a bright future ahead of her and New Orleans in particular is on the rise. We have recently celebrated the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras in recent weeks to much fanfare and success. If we want our communities and our country to be great, we must all contribute.
