Although the NTSA’s statistics are from 2006, they provide that there were 88,000 motorcyclists injured in highway accidents alone and 4,810 motorcyclist deaths in road accidents. Further, a 2009 Highway Safety’s Highway Loss Data report states that 42% of two vehicle fatal motorcycle crashes involved another vehicle making a left hand turn.

Clearly, the lack of visibility of a motorcycle compared to another larger vehicle contributes to these accidents. The motorcycle has a much smaller silhouette. Unfortunately, the drivers of passenger cars and trucks oftentimes are not actively looking for motorcycles on the roadway. A motorcyclist may be an excellent driver, but it is the other driver that will likely cause an unavoidable motorcycle accident.

Motorcycles Should Use Headlamps to Avoid Accident Injuries
To counter this lack of visibility, a motorcyclist should have his headlamps turned on and wear a high visibility yellow, orange, or bright red jacket.
