NHTSA: Speeding Contributed to More Than 10,000 Deaths in 2012
There were several factors that contributed to the tragic accident that put Brittany Berry in ICU. It is likely that her injuries would have been far less severe if the at-fault driver had not been speeding.
Speeding increases the risk of injury or death in the event of a crash. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 22 percent of all passenger-vehicle drivers who were involved in fatal accidents in 2012 were speeding. That year, speeding was a contributing factor in 30 percent of all traffic deaths – accounting for 10,219 fatalities.
How to Reduce Your Risk of Getting in a Speeding-Related Accident
Sometimes there is little a driver can do to avoid a crash. This, however, is very rare – more than 90 percent of accidents involve human error, and most of these could be prevented if drivers behave responsibly.
Here are four tips to help you avoid speeding-related accidents:
- Plan Ahead: Try to leave early for work and other appointments. This will help you avoid feeling rushed, which could motivate you to speed.
- Use Cruise Control: If you are driving on an open highway, activate your vehicle’s cruise control. This will reduce your fuel consumption and help you maintain a safe speed.
- Avoid Distractions: Drivers who text, talk on cell phones or engage in other distracted behaviors are more prone to speeding.
- Drive Slower Than the Posted Speed Limit: Although you should never drive slower than the flow of traffic, you can reduce your risk of crashing by travelling a few miles below the speed limit.
