A three-vehicle crash on U.S. 61 that left one man dead has resulted in the arrest of the dump truck driver who allegedly caused the wreck. According to WBRZ2, 26-year-old Deante Dixon now faces charges related to failure to stop at a stop sign and negligent homicide.
The crash happened at the intersection of U.S. 61 and Flanacher Road. Dixon was heading eastbound on Flanacher Road when he stopped at an opening in the median, but the back of the dump truck he was driving was still in the left lane of U.S. 61.
A BMW driven by 29-year-old Gilbert Rivera crashed into the rear of the dump truck, spun out and collided with a Ford F-150. Although Rivera was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, he suffered fatal injuries.

Survey Your Blind Spots
Many drivers are not aware that commercial trucks have multiple blind spots. If you drive a big rig, make sure you consistently watch for vehicles in these areas:
- Behind the side mirrors;
- Directly behind the truck; and
- On the side of the truck, just in front of the cab.
Adjust Your Speed to the Conditions
Reduce your speed in poor weather and heavy traffic. Driving too fast for the conditions will extend your stopping distance and reduce the amount of time you have to react to unexpected hazards.

Load Your Cargo Carefully
Stacking cargo too high will increase drag, and if your load is uneven, it will adversely affect the vehicle’s handling.
Get Plenty of Sleep
Fatigue is a leading cause of truck accidents in the United States. Commercial drivers should get at least seven hours of shuteye and follow a consistent sleep routine. Getting plenty of rest will make you more alert, speed up your reaction time, and prevent you from falling asleep behind the wheel.
Unfortunately, all it takes is one mistake to cause a devastating accident. If you were injured in a truck crash, contact Morris Bart, LLC. A Lafayette personal-injury attorney will help you claim the maximum compensation.
