A Gulfport cyclist is back on the road after a near fatal accident earlier this year. According to WDAM, a car hit Carter Bise in broad daylight while riding home from work. Surveillance footage captured the accident on camera.
Bise suffered serious injuries including punctured and collapsed lungs, broken ribs, road rash, lacerations and bruises. He spent five days in the hospital.
Bise was wearing brightly colored clothing and a helmet when the crash happened, but he has taken steps to avoid similar accidents in the future. Bise now rides with a light on the back of his helmet, and he has equipped his bicycle with a flashing taillight.

Take a Riding Course
If you’ve been riding your bike for years, then it may seem unnecessary to take a safety course. However, according to BikeRadar, cycling courses teach riders how to anticipate and avoid common accident scenarios. They are helpful for both beginner and experienced bikers.
Ride in the Middle of the Lane
It is safer to ride in the middle of the lane rather than close to the curb. This is because drivers may think they can safely pass you if you are next to the curb, but if you clip the curb, then you could fall into traffic. As a rule of thumb, you should aim to ride at least 19 inches from the curb at all times.

Wear Bright or Reflective Clothing
One of the best ways to reduce your risk of crashing is to help drivers see you. Wearing brightly colored clothing or a reflective vest is particularly important when riding at dusk or dawn, or in adverse weather. You should also equip your bicycle with a front headlight and flashing taillight.
Avoid Sidewalks
Riding on sidewalks increases the likelihood of a crash. You may encounter motorists reversing out of driveways or parking lots. It is particularly dangerous to ride on sidewalks if you cycle fast.
Make Eye Contact with Drivers
The best way to ensure that drivers notice you is to make eye contact with them. If a motorist is looking down or does not make eye contact, then he or she is not paying attention.
