Where’d You Go to High School?
Morris Bart is an alumnus of Alcee Fortier High School, now the site of Robert Mills Lusher School. The alumni of Fortier and its one-time rival in sports, Walter L. Cohen High School, get together annually for the Fortier-Cohen Alumni Classic, a basketball game and fundraising extravaganza that’s part nostalgia and partly focused on the future.
And each year the Alumni Classic bestows special honors upon a select list of invitees who have made an impact on the local community. This year’s list of honorees included Attorney Morris Bart, Mayor-elect Latoya Cantrell, Freddie “Big Freedia” Ross, and the Hot 8 Brass Band.
Attendees get to not only relive the excitement of school games, cheerleaders, marching bands and intense competition, but also show educators, staff, coaches and community leaders how much they are appreciated. Plus, it’s all for a good cause. There’s another saying associated with the Alumni Classic – that it believes in saving kids one instrument at time – and the facts certainly bear that out.
In the past six years, the Alumni Classic has donated musical instruments to New Orleans schools including Walter L. Cohen/College Prep, Eleanor McMain, Sophie B. Wright, Andrew Wilson, Helen Cox, and James M. Singleton.
