Allergan is a manufacturer that mainly focuses on providing products for medical aesthetics, eye care, the nervous system, and gastroenterology. However, more recently Allergan has been in the spotlight regarding a defect with their Biocell® textured breast implants and tissue expanders. This issue has linked the implants to a form of cancer called breast implant-associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).
What Is an Allergan Natrelle Biocell® Implant?
The Allergan Natrelle Biocell® implants were a textured implant and tissue expander series designed for women’s breast enhancement. The textured pores of the implant were designed to aid “tissue in-growth”. This reduces the likelihood of implant migration or rotation.

Has There been a Recall on the Allergan Implants?
Yes. The FDA requested Allergan recall the Biocell® textured breast implants and in July of 2019 an official recall was announced. The FDA advises women with BIA-ALCL to have their implants removed.
What Is BIA-ALCL?
BIA-ALCL stands for Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma. This form of cancer is not actually breast cancer but instead a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma – a cancer of the immune system.
In most diagnosis, BIA-ALCL will be located in the scar tissue and fluid surrounding the breast implant, however, it also spread throughout the body. Symptoms of BIA-ALCL include:
- Breast hardening
- Breast swelling
- Lumps in the breast or armpit
- Pain in the affected area
- Fatigue
- Redness/Skin Rash
- Weight loss
If you are suffering from any of the symptoms of BIA-ALCL, contact your physician immediately. You may need to have your implants removed and begin medical treatment.
