Michael was born and raised in New Orleans, coming from a family that has been in Louisiana going back to colonial times. He entered the workforce as a laborer in various trades for most of his life before deciding to pursue an education. As a first-generation college student in his thirties and father of three, Michael worked with great effort to attend college at Southeastern during the day. He was awarded a full scholarship to LSU Law, where he excelled in trial advocacy, was selected for the Board of Advocates, elected as VP of Internal Competitions, and inducted into the Order of Barristers. Upon graduation, Michael served as an Assistant District Attorney for Orleans Parish in the Trials Division.
