After almost 50 years, one of the most celebrated sports rivalries in HBCU football has grown into a three day event that offers exciting football, delicious food, and fun for everyone. Here’s everything you need to know about the Bayou Classic 2019!
The Rivalry at the Heart of the Tradition
Although “classic” football games have been taking place between HBCU teams for nearly 100 years, the rivalry between Grambling State University Tigers and the Southern University Jaguars is unique. Now in its 46th official year, this exciting game has become a beloved tradition for many New Orleanians. The game has taken place in the Superdome for almost 30 years, attracting 250,000 attendees and 4-5 million fans watching from home on the NBC Sports Network.
Both teams usually pass on FCS eligibility just to participate in this special game. Currently, the Grambling State Tigers are the official leaders of the series with 23 wins to Southern University’s 22, but Southern is looking to square things up this year and take home the trophy! This exciting game will take place on Saturday, November 24 with kickoff at 4pm. Bayou Classic 2018 tickets can be purchased online and start at only $16 each for general admission!

All the Fun that Makes the Bayou Classic More than Just a Football Game
Sure, the Bayou Classic is a football game but these days it’s also so much more! Now this three day event offers a huge variety of options for everyone. Students can participate in tech challenges, attend empowerment presentations, and even career seminars, sharpening their skills before enjoying all the fun the Classic has to offer.
Perhaps most well-known is the Bayou Classic Battle of the Bands and Greek Show that takes place the Friday before the game in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome from 6-11pm. Here, the Southern University Human Jukebox and the Grambling Marching Tigers square off in an unofficial battle to get fans jazzed up for the game. You can get your tickets online before the battle or at the door and the best part is they start at only $20.
On Saturday, November 29, the bands will lead fans on a parade from the Dome to the French Market starting at 9:30 am. Once the parade is over, the annual Bayou Classic Fan Fest 2019 will begin at 11:30am in Champion Square. Fans can feast at food trucks or enjoy any of the great food options available in Downtown New Orleans.
